All five divisions of the Young People's Chorus of New York City will come together for their annual "Spring Celebration" in a program of music that circles the world and represents the diversity of the choristers that make up the acclaimed chorus. Led by YPC Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, and YPC conductors Elizabeth Núñez, Amy Kotsonis, and Sophia Miller, the choristers will sing a program that includes two world premieres by
Thomas Cabaniss, American folk songs, compositions from Peru, Greece, Japan, Scandinavia, South Africa, and the Caribbean, plus a new work commissioned by YPC from Paquito D'Rivera entitled Tembandumba. The choristers will be accompanied by pianists Jon Holden and Fabio Gardenal with John Hadfield on percussion. The Young People's Chorus of New York City conducted by Francisco J. Núñez will participate with four Latino choruses in La Sociedad Coral Latinoamericana's Third Chorus Concert, this year honoring Hernando Merchand, who developed the Santa Rosa of Lima's Grupo Coral America. Other choruses taking part are Coral Ecumenica Cantico Nuevo, a Methodist church choir; Cantoria Saint Joseph from St.
Joseph Church in Palisades, NJ; and Coro de Camara San Pablo from the Methodist United San Pablo Church in Queens
For more than two decades, the Young People's Chorus of New York City has provided children of diverse abilities and backgrounds with a unique program of music education and choral performance, while maintaining a model of artistic excellence and harmony that enriches the community. Founded in 1988 by Mr. Núñez, YPC is the resident chorus of the
92nd Street Y, Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln enter/ and WNYC, New York Public Radio and has been recognized with numerous awards. The chorus has won almost a dozen gold medals in competitions in North America and Europe and recently won its second ASCAP/ Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming.
This summer 53 members of the YPC will compete against a broad array of global choruses at the world famous Llangollen Eisteddfod in Wales from July 3 to 11. Later, from July 19 to August 12, 35 other YPC members will return to Japan by popular demand for a 15-city tour, after winning standing ovations in 18 Japanese cities last year.
Each year more than 1100 children from all ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds participate in the YPC through its core after-school program, its Satellite program in eight New York City schools, and its two national affiliates in Erie, Pennsylvania, and Tenafly, New Jersey.
