It has been a crazy month for Melbourne's Georgia Flipo (G Flip), who recently uploaded her debut single to triple j Unearthed. 'About You' is officially released today on all platforms.
An addictive, bittersweet piece of shimmering pop, 'About You' was spun on triple j's Good Nights a few hours after it was uploaded on Unearthed, and it soon after caught the attention of Australian and international media. The Line Of Best Fit said it was 'the best debut we've heard in months', Pitchforknamed it 'Best New Music', YouTube added it to their New Music This Week playlist (over 99 million subscribers), and more.
Such praise is a rewarding, yet overwhelming result for Georgia, who spent the majority of 2017 holed up in her room working on the project. Thankfully, she has been preparing for this moment almost her whole life.
At school G Flip was known as "that drummer girl"; from Year 8 on, she spent every spare moment with her drum teacher, who was, like her, young, queer and female.
When her teacher died suddenly at 30 years of age, it drove a devastated Georgia to go hard after the dreams they'd talked about in those long hours at school: tour the US, be "that drummer girl who sings" and eventually, make her own music. After hitting the road across the US and Asia playing drums in a touring band, she realised she'd taken other people's music as far as she could. Soon after, she headed back to Melbourne and set up a bedroom studio in a suburban sharehouse. In the afternoons and evenings, Georgia taught drums and piano to kids in order to support herself. But from 9.30am to 4.30pm every day of 2017, she taught herself; how to produce her own songs, how to tease out the melodies she hummed into her phone's voice memo app and how to find her own voice after years of performing other people's songs. 'About You' is the first taste of those efforts.
