"Perfect" is also featured in a new global ad campaign for Chanel's "Chance" fragrance. Directed by Jean Paul Goude (Grace Jones), the commercial is choreographed by Ryan Heffington (Baby Driver, Sia, "Kenzo World").
"'Perfect' is a song I initially started with my brothers from Brazil, Tropkillaz," Spiegel explains. "We've been obsessed with the latest wave of Baile Funk coming from Sao Paulo, but we decided to put our own twist on it. I do music for all of Jean-Paul Goude's projects, and when he reached out about this Chanel commercial that he was directing and Ryan Heffington was choreographing, I immediately thought of this track we had started. I played it for Jean-Paul, and he loved it. We decided to put some vocals on the song. Bia is someone that I've wanted to work with for a while, and I wanted someone on the track that embodies the fun spirit of Sao Paulo Baile Funk, so I flew down to Brazil and recorded MC Pikachu along with the Tropkillaz dudes."
In addition to the new track, Spiegel also recently directed the web series "Wu Tang In Space Eating Invisible Sliders." Shot in the style of '60s and '70s science fiction television shows such as "Star Trek," the series stars Wu Tang Clan members RZA (having uploaded his consciousness into the computer RZA 9000), GZA and Ghostface Killah aboard their spaceship, the Wu-F-O, orbiting Earth while answering questions left by fans at 1-833-4-SLIDER and eating White Castle's new all-vegetarian Impossible Slider (RZA and GZA are both vegan, while Ghostface Killah is a vegetarian). Spiegel's recent singles mark his return from an extended musical hiatus during which he focused on his film work. His first new track in two years, "20 Below" featuring Anderson .Paak and Doja Cat, premiered earlier this year, hailed by Complex as "a chilled-out, soulful track with crisp percussion and warm synths that naturally incorporates smooth vocal performances from both Anderson .Paak and Doja Cat." Other recent tracks from Spiegel include "To Whom It May Concern" featuring Ceelo Green, Theophilus London and Alex Ebert (listen/share at http://cos.lv/crG530l6k77), "One Last Time" featuring Goldilox and co-produced by AlunaGeorge's George Reid (listen/share at https://bit.ly/2PR3HXb), "Obsession" featuring SoKo (listen/share at https://bit.ly/2P5XXbg), and "Champagne" feat. Aynzli Jones (listen/share at https://bit.ly/2QWpn8k).
"Perfect," "Champagne," "Obsession," "One Last Time," "To Whom It May Concern" and "20 Below" are Spiegel's first releases since his 2016 single "Mutant Brain" featuring Assassin (available via Interscope Records), which was featured as the soundtrack to the Spike Jonze-directed "Kenzo World" short film (hailed as "the greatest fragrance ad of all time" by Fast Company). The track reached #2 on the Spotify Global Viral 50 playlist and won the AICP "Best Music" award as well as two Gold Lions at the Cannes Lions Film Festival. (with Brazilian DJ Zegon) debuted in 2009 with the album album The Spirit of Apollo featuring appearances by Kanye West, Childish Gambino, M.I.A., Tom Waits, RZA, David Byrne and many others. He has gone on to establish himself as a critically acclaimed music and film director, serving as music director for Kanye West's "Glow in the Dark" tour and Karen O's Stop the Virgens theatrical project, the latter of which Spiegel co-wrote and produced with Karen.
In 2005 Spiegel founded his award-winning commercial music house, Squeak E. Clean, through which he has scored commercial campaigns for Nike, Adidas, Cadillac, Honda, Sonos and many more. Other highlights among Spiegel's film credits are the scores to Spike Jonze's Yeah Right!, the top-selling skate movie of all-time; HBO's Pretty Things; Drew Barrymore's Whip It and more. In 2015 Spiegel turned his attention to film direction with the video for the final track to be released by N.A.S.A., "Jihad Love Squad" feat. KRS-One. He went on to direct a pair of short films for National Geographic and CNN's first-ever live commercial, which aired at 11:35 p.m. ET on New Year's Eve 2017 during CNN's "New Year's Eve Live" and received nearly 3.3 million live viewers.
