Today pop/R&B singer-songwriter TOTEM released his new single, "Staring at the Sun" (Spotify - YouTube). The track, which previews the artist's upcoming third studio EP, finds the pop provocateur on his most longing, sexiest track yet. "Staring at the Sun" follows the success of, "Aftertaste," his third single to celebrate seven-figure streaming numbers, after "Addicted" and "Bubblegum." The totally independent artist is now over 13 million streams on Spotify alone.
The FADER notes, "He has a skill for offsetting a propulsive bassline with the kind of forlorn falsetto that has you gazing out the window thinking about a past relationship," Billboard agrees, noting TOTEM has found a unique way to, "combine the tender vocals of R&B with up-to-date, buzzing beds of pop and electronic." Complex singles out TOTEM's, "goosebump-inducing vocals."
The new single previews the rising star's upcoming third EP, following 2015's Pride and 2016's Echoes. Several recent singles have landed on Spotify's New Music Friday, Viral 50charts in the U.S. and internationally and have received adds on other important playlists (Weekend Buzz, Pop Rising, Kaskade Konnect, Alternative R&B) as well as Apple Music's Best of the Week, New Music and Hot Tracks. This attention has helped TOTEM reach over 13 million Spotify streams alone and led to high profile invitations to play SXSW's Spotify House and Lollapalooza.
"Staring at The Sun" Lyrics:
you, yeah you
you're all i want, no i can't move you
and it just goes on and on, on and on
go, highway
cigarette sittin sideways
go, and it just goes on and on, on and on
i want you, want you
want you, want you
but baby i can't shut my eyes
no i'm not gonna learn, i'm in love with the burn
i'm going blind staring at the sun
you act sweet
a sazerac and some ice cream
you, but you know that's what i want, what i want
stop, don't shoot
you leave a mark like a tattoo
stop, but you know that's what i want, what i want
Pre chorus
tried to say i don't believe in love
it's physical, it's physical
chorus
