Australian singer-songwriter Tom West has released a new single, "Got It Cheap," and announced the title of his upcoming album: I'm Livin' will be out this summer. Listen to "Got It Cheap" via Vanyaland and get excited for plenty more to come from West over the next many months.
"Got It Cheap" is a reflection on the disposability of modern life, imagined during dream-like walks through the Australian suburbia. An open-tuned banjo plays off against West's old Stratocaster before the song collapses into riffs and swells into dream-like changes. The track is a highlight of I'm Livin', which was composed over a two-year period during which the singer was deeply influenced by the sudden and traumatic death of his father and mentor.Tom West on "Got It Cheap:"
"I recall feeling a little jaded at my place in the world, and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the advertising and pressures to consume anything and everything that bombard us in our day to day lives-so that's the basic premise of the idea of the song. But, as time went on, I realized that there is a cheapness, in many ways, to the way that society values people and our relationships [...] Events later conspired that-with my old man getting sick and dying-this idea of the cheapness of our lives really became the stepping stone, or starting point, into the whole album which took on a bigger scope than I could have ever originally imagined."
"Got It Cheap" was recorded both in Tom West's home in the Adelaide Hills of Australia and Nashville, where the project was mixed and co-produced by Collin Pastore (Lucy Dacus).
Tom West performs music that traverses the rocky and undulating ground between simple, whimsical folk tunes and grand and moody soundscapes; delivering shows where his purposeful songwriting, unforgettable voice, and intricate arrangements come to the fore. Effortlessly shifting between performing solo or with his band where banjos, saxophones, and guitars complete the ramshackle wall of sound, he has drawn comparisons to the likes of Volcano Choir, Andrew Bird, The Lumineers, Of Monsters & Men, and Ben Howard.
2018 has seen West's songs resonate with new fans around the world. Additions to major Spotify playlists and consecutive ads to radio in his native Australia confirm the songwriters ability to connect with his booming number of listeners.
Armed with a new repertoire of songs and stories from years of performing, writing, and traveling between Australia, Europe, and the Americas, West will be touring his upcoming material to the US in the latter half 2018 and beyond.
