Los Angeles punk-funk outfit Thumpasaurus shared an epic tale of sublime transcendence titled "Where Does The Love Go" late last night, that premiered on a site called Travolta Love Quest. Enjoy and share the funk opera in five parts 'starring' John Travolta via Youtube.
Inspired by the head-spinning experiences of the band's college years, that included mania, depression and anxiety, "Where Does The Love Go" explores a mixed bag of emotions leading to an ultimate reinvention of reality, and the understanding and purpose that comes on the other side of the tunnel. The concept for the Thump Opera began two years ago, when singer Lucas Tamaren first showed the band the "Where Does It Go" track, which would become part one of five. Realizing the song sounded like the first part to a suite or epic, the band began an investigation into the big question: Where does the love go?
John Travolta is a common theme throughout the Thump Opera because of Ben Benjamin - the band's traveling visuals tech and director of the "Where Does The Love Go" video. Ben had been incorporating Travolta into the visuals of Thumpasaurus' live shows, and the quintet noticed that the star's career and personal life has hit all the highs and lows that are felt throughout the opera's music. They began to piece together and re-examine Travolta's career into a remixed hero's journey that worked over the new music. Now, Travolta is a divine being of their Thumpaverse that they call "The Decider."
The band says of the "Where Does The Love Go" opera:
If anything, the opera is just proof to ourselves that we can go wherever we want with Thumpasaurus. There wasn't any second thought to making an opera, like 'is this streamable?' or 'will it be popular?' We were just stoked on the idea of the piece as a concept, so we went all-in on it. The hope is that this spirit carries through all of our work. We want to make movies, graphic novels, kids shows - basically everything, because there is so much to explore in the Thumpaverse.
Thumpasaurus already turned the opera into a full stage play with clowns, which won a comedy award in its 25 shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Ahead of the Thump Opera release, the band hosted a drive-in movie screening experience of the opera and its accompanying (Travolta-based) visuals, which was made possible by KXLU. Attendees drove into a dark and dingy parking lot, tuned in on the radio, and could hear, see, and feel the opera all at once.
Thumpasaurus is a gang of five deftly skilled musical agents on a perpetual quest to stabilize their eclectro-frenetic moods of post apocalyptic new wave. A band bred out of the present day's insatiable appetite to consume, they extract scraps from hard to reach corners of the dark web into uplifting nuggets of empowerment and party.
