Widely considered Scotland's premier traditional band, The Tannahill Weavers celebrate their 50th Anniversary with the release of their eighteenth album, ÒRACH ("golden" in Gaelic) on August 31 on Compass Records. NPR's Folk Alley is premiering the album in its entirety as a "Hear It First" selection today:

The Tannies, as they're known, boast a diverse repertoire that spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Their music celebrates the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. Known worldwide, these versatile musicians have consistently received accolades over the years for their exuberant performances and outstanding recordings. The music may be old-time Celtic, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight-ahead rock and roll. Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland and named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the group has made an international name for its special brand of Scottish music, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms.
ÒRACH (THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY ALBUM), finds the current line-up of Roy Gullane, Phil Smillie, John Martinand Lorne MacDougall bringing together colleagues and members past and present to record an album of all new material - traditional and contemporary songs and sets of tunes in the Tannies' distinctive style. The physical album contains photos as well as a glossary to understand the traditional songs and extensive liner notes for each song detailing its origin and performers.
The Tannahill Weavers will be bringing their eclectic live shows -- from reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs -- to US stages this fall. The variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits. For more info go to http://www.tannahillweavers.com.
