Since 2005, the Los Angeles-area band The Skylarks has weaved a string of sounds that have without trying wiped away most descriptives. Through lineup changes and four recordings, the constant has been frontman and songwriter Sam Mellon. His structured, yet literate writing style does one thing this reviewer likes: it makes you stop and listen.
On the Back of the New is the latest work, just released in September. Engineer Tony Green has helped forge a record that seems in two parts. One constant is a feeling of space, room for where sounds seem to float about to create a dreamscape. The core of the music from Russ Chaput (guitar), Anthony Cook (bass) and drummer Brian Olamit is assertive but never detracts.
"As if to Say" and "Carry it Home" propel the listener into the project, with just enough of a push. Then, the shift of gears to "Change of Heart" offers a little of part two, a more accessible, up-tempo sound without any compromise. Mellon's vocals are never forced, and his harmonies with Amy Luftig Viste aren't locked together, which is also pleasing.
The Skylarks have taken a step forward, not with a formula, but a sense of familiarity. On the Back of the New draws on several musical influences, and has quite credibly made its own thing. They are one band to watch for in future.
