Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (PTPA) will present The Crystals and Shirley Alston Reeves "Up Close & Personal" on Sunday, March 29, at 3 p.m. When The Crystals were first discovered by Phil Spector, not one of them was out of high school yet.
Their first recording, "There's No Other (Like My Baby)," became their first hit and catapulted the group straight to the famed Apollo Theatre. The Crystals continued recording and produced five top ten hits: "Uptown," "He's A Rebel," "He's Sure The Boy I Love," "Da Doo Ron Ron," and "Then He Kissed Me." The group has since scaled from five members to three members. Original Crystals member Dee Dee Kenniebrew, who was present for the very first recording by the group, Patricia Pritchett-Lewis and MelSoulTree make up The Crystals today.
Born Shirley Owens in Henderson, N.C., Shirley Alston Reeves moved to Passaic, N.J., at an early age. While attending Passaic High School, Reeves co-founded The Shirelles and sang the lead vocals for the group. Their first single release, "I Met Him On A Sunday," as written by the group collectively and became an instant success. Reeves enjoyed a string of hits with The Shirelles throughout the 1960s, including "Tonight's The Night," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "Dedicated To The One I Love," "Mama Said," and "Soldier Boy." In 1996, Shirley Alston Reeves was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
