Tuning into Tremé with Larry Blumenfeld

The HBO fiction and the New Orleans Reality

In Sidney Bechet's memoir, "Treat It Gentle," the late, great clarinetist's real grandfather is supplanted by Omar, a fictional figure based on a folk tale, all the better to convey stirring truths about the true origins of New Orleans jazz. Real and imagined intermingLe Pointedly in New Orleans, in all walks of life. Set in New Orleans, David Simon's fictional HBO series "Treme" picked up three months after the floods that resulted from the levee failures after Hurricane Katrina. Culture, which in New Orleans means a tight braid of music, cuisine, dance, visual art, and street life, is the primary focus of the series, as indeed it was and is the defining element of the city's recovery and renewed identity.

These 90-minute conversations are led by writer Larry Blumenfeld, who covers jazz regularly for The Wall Street Journal, writes the "Blu Notes" blog, and who has written extensively about New Orleans since the flood. He'll use the fourth and final season of the HBO series to frame a wide-ranging consideration of jazz culture in New Orleans and its role in continued recovery. Excerpts from the show will be screened and special guests-musicians, participants in the series, and scholars-will join in the discussion.

Larry Blumenfeld writes about music and culture for The Wall Street Journal, Village Voice and many other publications, is editor-at-large of Jazziz magazine, and maintains the blog Blu Notes.He is a former Katrina Media Fellow with the Open Society Institute, researching cultural recovery in New Orleans, and the winner of the 2012 Jazz Journalists Association Helen Dance-Robert Palmer Award for Writing.

To take a new look at the New Orleans second-line tradition and its NYC incarnations, this Parallax Conversation features Sunny Jain and Matt Moran, leaders of New York City's brass band heavy hitters Red Baraat, an eight-piece bhangra, funk, jazz, go-go, hip-hop riot, and Slavic Soul Party!, a fiery Balkan brass, jazz and Gypsy mash-up, respectively. These two groups represent the breed of second-lines that could only have been born in the global hub that is NYC. We invite you to join us for what' bound to be a lively evening as we discuss what exactly is in the air and soil here that nurtures some of the world's most delicious brass music.

Jazz saxophonist and educator Loren Schoenberg, Artistic Director of the National JazzMuseum in Harlem, brings the rare, recently-discovered Savory Collection jazz recordings to life. Schoenberg, with an all-star Bay Area jazzband, riffs along with, the classic jazz treasures.

We are so thrilled to have internationally renowned saxophonist/ composer/educator Dayna Stephens for our Harlem Speaks interview series this month. A fluid, vigorous soloist with a warm, soulful sound, Dayna has also proven himself a master of composition and arrangement, a highly acclaimed band leader and an in-demand side man for contemporary jazz masters such as Kenny Barron, Al Foster, Idris Mohammed, Taylor Eigsti and Roy Hargrove.

These programs are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State. The Savory Concerts are supported in part by a grant from the NationalEndowment for the Arts. Art Works.
