The Kitchen will present The Blow: Brand New Abyss from March 30-April 1. The Blow is Melissa Dyne and Khaela Maricich. A shape-shifting entity, The Blow has taken various forms over time and manifests in an array of media, employing popular music as a vehicle for broader explorations. Operating between contexts and genres, the duo works with sound recording, performance, installation, writing and physical media, aiming to address and expand the limitations encountered within each framework. The Blow have spent the past three years developing a new body of songs and a new method for producing them: Brand New Abyss marks the completion of an extended compositional odyssey.
These performances will be intimate, seated events in which the duo will install their live production rig and use lighting and narrative to recreate the atmosphere inside of which they composed their new material - which will be performed live for the first time. The songs are electroacoustic pop, webs of frequency created with a mothership of analog synthesizers, ancient samplers and other audio gear. The Blow are honored to be presenting this new work at The Kitchen, home to early performances by the Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell, The Beastie Boys, The Raincoats and many other art and music heroes.
Their self-titled album The Blow, released in 2013, was listed among the top-ten songs of 2013 by The New York Times, and was NPR music editor Bob Boilen's #1 album of that year. They have been curating WOMANPRODUCER.com, an archive of female music producers, engineers and sonic innovators, since 2014. Their performances have been presented at The Wexner Center, Artists Space, The Warhol Museum, On The Boards, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, and Pulse Art Miami, as well as in traditional music venues such as The Henry Fonda Theater, Great American Music Hall, Joe's Pub and The Gramercy Theater. They live and work in New York City.
The Blow: Brand New Abyss will take place March 30, March 31 and April 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at www.thekitchen.org; by phone at 212.255.5793 x11; or in person at The Kitchen (512 West 19th Street), Tuesdays - Saturdays, 2:00 - 6:00 P.M.
