Surf Rock is Dead creates dream pop through a new wave filter and will release the We Have No Friends? EP on Sept 22 via The Native Sound. Today, the Brooklyn duo releases "As If", an ethereal psych-pop gem detailing the struggle of trying to distance yourself from someone you love. We Have No Friends? is available for pre-order HERE.
debuted the track yesterday saying, "A glowing three-minutes, 'As If' adds layered vocal harmonies to the dizzying backdrop of sparkling guitar lines that lead the whole thing forward in a heady sway of colour, the track arriving just in time to catch that mid-summer slump and throw the whole thing back in its face."
We Have No Friends? will be issued both digitally and on limited edition 12-inch vinyl varients with the band's debutSRiD EP as a bonus b-side. Colored pressings will be available in Coke Bottle Clear, Milky Clear with Red Splatterand Light Blue. Record club
VNYL is exclusively pressing 800 White copies for their subscribers.
Originally from
Chicago and Melbourne, Australia respectively, band members Kevin Pariso (guitar/vocals) and Joel Witenberg (vocals/bass) wrote the EP as a form of escape.
"Both of us recently left long term relationships and dating in NYC is an absolute mess so we locked ourselves into a studio to get away from our thoughts and the hot city summer," explains Witenberg. "One of us would come up with a lyrical song concept and build on it together through our own experiences."
The EP title came out of a running joke between the band members during their self-imposed exile to the studio.
"During the recording we would spend late weekend nights jamming and writing music instead of spending it out with friends," laughs Pariso. "Putting time into something creative can definitely hamper your social life but the fruit it bears is worth the sacrifices."
Those sacrifices are paying off as SRiD has been praised by Nylon, Under The Radar, Noisey and CLASH and led to tours with The Jezabels, Day Wave, High Highs, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah,
We Are Scientists and Mourn. EP opener "In Between" premiered at
Billboard this spring and "gives a taste of a salty coast infused with bleached beats of haze and modern surf music that makes you feel the need for the track on repeat."
The band just completed a tour with
Amy Shark and is finishing up dates this week with
Grace Mitchell ahead of an appearance at Billboard's Hot 100 fest at Jones Beach on August 20. Additional dates will be added in the fall in support of the EP.
