Baltimore-based Sunbathers sear through the indie-pop rock sphere by pairing danceable melodies and raw lyrics with inimitable, soaring vocals. Today the band announces their new EP, The Pool Party, out Friday, June 7 - the second installment in a pair of 2019 releases - debuting first single "The Deep End", a bittersweet account of a relationship fizzling out - listen + share via your favorite DSP.
The music for "The Deep End" was conceived long before the lyrics, starting as a simple synth and drum loop that developed into an infinite groove. The track's joyous melodies contrast a desperate story as the lyrical inspiration for "The Deep End" came from witnessing another's relationship fall apart.
"The push and pull was heartbreaking to watch, but it wasn't my place to say anything," explains lead vocalist Sean Lynott. "I came up with these lyrics to air those thoughts and meditate on the sense of helplessness, both of being in a position of having unrequited feelings, and of my own as a bystander. The perspective in the lyrics is not mine, but I've certainly been there before."
Sunbathers is Lynott, drummer Shohsei Oda, and guitarists Tim Boaté and Pete Mindnich and The Pool Partyincorporates electronic and ambient soundscapes with samples, heavy synths, hybrid drums, and varied vocal effects.
On the EP, "The Deep End" is bookended by two instrumental interludes. Beginning with the "Pool Party", found sounds from a neighborhood in the south of Spain climax with a literal splash, signaling a dive into "The Deep End". Interlude "Towel Off" follows the track by easing listeners out of the groove and putting them back on dry land, slowly stripping away the song's core melodies layer by layer.
While "The Deep End" considers a harsh, potential reality of love, other tracks are an attempt at coming to terms, acknowledging that it is better to feel something than nothing at all. "Urbody" describes intimacy, both corporeal and cerebral, and the potent effects of quiet moments alone with a partner that make us feel alive. "Brute" is a rumination on how it would feel to be literally and figuratively consumed by the object of your desire, while "Where Is My Moon?" ends the EP with a wandering story about feeling lost and yearning to find a central guiding light.
All of the songs on The Pool Party are tied together by similar threads of longing, a continuation of the lyrical narrative in the band's recently released A Heat Wave EP. Previous singles from A Heat Wave, "Honeysuk" and "Intimacy", have received accolades from Huffington Post, Northern Transmissions, PopMatters, and more. Spinnin' Records artist Curtis Alto released a remix of "Intimacy" which has garnered a million views on YouTube and over a million streams across Spotify and Apple Music. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements.
