Somerset Catalog is a bubble gum doom pop outfit from Denver, Colorado. The band makes music that moves between desperate longing and loud resignation, creating music with a bit of a (welcomed) personality disorder. They layer multiple vocals over driving rhythms and allow synth hooks to peek between shimmering guitars, and the connective tissue of the band is a reverence for melody and meaningful lyrics. (They also like each other a great deal--and whiskey helps.)
Somerset Catalog is Matt Grizzell, Georgina Guidotti, John Kuker, Brigid McAuliffe, Bryce Merrill, and Trevor Trumble. Band members are also in Denver-based Poet's Row (Grizzell) and The Big Get Even (Guidotti). Previous bands include Bela Karoli (McAuliffe), Everything Absent or Distorted (Kuker, Trumble, Merrill), Instant Empire (Grizzell), and Rabbit is a Sphere (Guidotti). Band members (Kuker, Merrill, McAuliffe, Trumble) are also co-owners of Misra Records, the Dayton-based label with releases by Phosphorescent, Destroyer, Great Lakes Swimmers, Shearwater, and Centro-matic, among others. Read the new article in Reverb on Somerset and Misra. RIYL: Beach House; The National; Neutral Milk Hotel; New Order; GBV; Yo La Tengo. Their self-titled E.P., recorded at Uneven Studios, is independently released and will be available at the Hi-Dive show. It includes the tracks "Broken Elbow," "Landing Gear," "All the Cyclones," and "This Piano." Listen to Radio 1190 at 3:15 on Valentine's Day to hear an interview with the band. |
