The past two years have been busy and fruitful for Bryndon Cook, who releases music as Starchild & The New Romantic. The Brooklyn-based musician and songwriter has spent much of this touring and collaborating with Solange on her Seat at the Table tour, which included performances across the globe at a variety of museums and unique venues. All while doing this, Cook signed to Ghostly International, released his debut EP Crucial (2016), was profiled by The New York Times as an Up Next artist to watch and most recently he was included in Rolling Stones' 25 Under 25.
The new single revels in the tender side of dissipated love. Still visited by the past yet at peace with the present,Bryndon Cook overlooks the valleys of a lost relationship to contemplate the peaks, beaming above a prismatic soul-tinged shuffle and luminescent keys. One of his most earnest songs to date, it's the first hue from more to come in 2018.
Speaking on the video treatment, Cook says: "Hangin On" takes us into a dream scape set against the backdrop of Freedom Summer 1964. A year ripe with political and social triumph yet mired with loss. We follow a team of young SNCC activists as they float through past passions and pain, present purgatories and the after life. Illusions to MLK's letter at Birmingham teamed with references to Goodman, Chaney & Schwerner help bridge a historic connection to the themes of love lost found central in this simple pop song from the new album, Language. Much like the lyrics harkening to someone's "only sunshine [having] gone away", many of our fallen heroes may have experienced a loss of love on a personal level too. This video is an homage to that, and a tribute to their spirits.
