Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Simon Okely Slow Dancer is opening for both Bahamas and Big Thief this week, including tonight's show at Mojo's Bar in Fremantle. Closing out his 2017 Okely has also released a new video for "I've Been Thinking", a track from his June 2017 release In A Mood. Okely filmed the video himself in New York City; watch it courtesy of DIY Mag HERE.
"'I shot and directed this video with a friend of mine during an amazing week of writing in NYC," Okely explained. "She'd let me stay on her couch for a couple of weeks after my first major US tour wrapped. New York is so beautiful and so ugly all at once, it's a very special place to me, and this video captures a very special time. I fell in love, over and over again."
The video came to fruition during Slow Dancer's first-ever US headlining tour this past fall which featured Petal aka the Run For Cover Records up-and-comer Kiley Lotz. Okely's label mate
Margaret Glaspy also shared a stage with him for select dates. Said The New York Times: "Mr. Okely draws on pop, soul and soft-rock traditions to offer a warm, inviting sound that's all his own."
Okely began writing as
Slow Dancer in 2014, naming the project after a lyric from a song on his debut LP Surrender that was "essentially an instruction manual for slow dancing with someone who is experiencing apathy. I really liked the sentiment, and thought it fit quite well with the overall sound." The record elevated him to a Triple J Artist To Watch and one of NME's 20 Bands You Need To Check Out.
