Skout's THESE BONES Video Premieres at PopMatters Image

Skout is very pleased to announce that the video for their new single "These Bones" has premiered at PopMatters. Watch it here!

Lifelong musicians Laura Valk and Connor Gladney met on an East Village stoop in late 2014. The next night, they played their first show together as Skout.

Skout's promising first EP ?Again Anew caught the attention of soul-pop powerhouse and international platinum musician Eric Hutchinson. Inspired by the duo's chemistry and their knack for pairing intricate percussive acoustic guitar with deeply introspective lyrics, Hutchinson would go on to produce the band's 2016 EP Just Words before bringing the duo out on his fall headlining tour that same year. The EP's title track peaked at #8 on Spotify's USA Viral 50 chart in early 2017, and to date the band is closing fast on one million total plays on Spotify.

Their new single "These Bones" wrestles with the universal anxiety that often comes with openly and honestly sharing one's true thoughts and emotions, especially when sharing those truths with someone you love and who loves you. "The idea for the song stemmed from a conversation Connor and I had during a break from a late-night writing session," shares Valk. "I was struggling in a tumultuous long-term relationship, but primarily kept fears and concerns to myself. That night I confided in Connor. Instead of blindly reassuring me, he told me that the relationship had run its course. It was everything I knew to be true, but nothing I wanted to hear."

Dropping one's defenses and sharing emotional struggle demonstrate a unique kind of courage; and it can take time to get there. "These Bones" provides no resolution to the struggle, instead ending with Valk's quiet admission, "...I'm not ready." For the narrator - and for songwriter Valk - the battle to be emotionally open is an ongoing one. "In that moment before you decide to open up to someone, you feel this overwhelming sense of exposure," says Valk, "and we wanted to depict that in the music video." The intensified lights during the bridge in the music video (the most emotionally charged part of the song) showcase the sensations that come with opening up while also providing a visual parallel to the intensified fear and anxiety of its consequences. "We hope to show others that while vulnerability may not come naturally," says Gladney, "it's a battle worth fighting and you're not alone."

Skout will be releasing new music and touring throughout 2018.
