C West is a millennial on the move. The 19-year old singer, songwriter and guitarist debuted his spiritual love song, "Breaks Your Heart," (Marquis Boone/ Tyscot) on streaming sites such as Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play this week. The velvet-toned tenor intends to stroll the path of celebrated urban inspirational artists such as Sounds of Blackness and Mali Music who merge inspirational or faith-focused themes with their R&B grooves.
"Before `Breaks Your Heart' was a song, it was a prayer I wrote on a sticky note two years ago," C West says of the breezy melody that was produced by Mave (N8 Tha Maven), Marquis Boone and TedyP. "I had been dealing with low self-esteem and depression concerning my mistakes. And, although, I've always had a heart and a love for God, I had a problem showing Him. My words just didn't match my actions and it was eating me alive."
C West hails from Buffalo, NY where he was raised in the church but was influenced by the music of Maxwell, Michael Jackson and Prince. While a student at Villa Maria College, he won a "Discovered" singing contest sponsored by Marquis Boone who manages the careers of Billboard No. 1 artists,
Casey J and Bri (Briana Babineaux). First prize was a recording contract and C West's inaugural album, Hide and Seek, releases this summer.
"One of the hardest things to do is choosing what God wants for us over what we want for ourselves," C West confesses as he ponders his current release. "I had to learn that the hard way. He's a jealous God and sometimes He has to break our hearts in order to squeeze into our lives... My heart was broken and I became desperate to change. My prayer then became, God I want what breaks your heart to break my heart. Here's my love song to you."
