Author and small business owner Sheri Wren Haymore of Mount Airy, NC tells the bittersweet tale of two "perfectly flawed" people stumbling upon love among less than ideal circumstances in her debut novel, "A Higher Voice."
"A Higher Voice" appeals to any reader of suspense novels and explores the themes of hope and forgiveness. In "A Higher Voice," legendary rock singer Britt Jordan marries Dena Martin from the fictional small town of Deerfield, NC. The story takes on a darker tone, however, first when Britt's failing voice causes him to end his career, and later, when he is forced by a stalker to hide his family in a compound on a nearby lake. On top of that, his brother intends to destroy him. Readers will be rooting for Britt as he begins on his journey to create a new life.
"Britt Jordan was an interesting and quirky character to write," says Sheri. "I kept backing him farther into a corner to see what he would do. Just how far would he go to protect Dena and her daughter? And would he allow his struggles to transform him?"
Haymore said the inspiration of the book began with her desire to tell a good story that has meaning, reaching to "raise the question of whether there is somebody bigger than us" and allow readers to consider the possibility of a larger purpose to life-or a "Higher Voice."
"As the story progresses, I more and more hear the way [the characters] would speak and begin to understand the way they would think. One thing grows out of another. For example, I didn't intentionally introduce the concept of accountability in 'A Higher Voice,' but after writing the story, I realized that [Britt] has instinctively made himself accountable to his wife in subtle ways. I played with that a little and brought it out in ways that make the concept obvious," Haymore said.
Haymore has been writing professionally for over 30 years, gaining her start at a High Point, NC marketing firm, B&C Associates. She received her bachelor's degree from High Point University in English with a minor in business administration. Haymore is the owner of Scenic Gifts in Mount Airy, as well as communicator for her husband, Clyde's, custom table business, Woodgenius, also located in Mount Airy. Haymore's second novel, "A Deeper Cut," is set to release in November.
