Lily Breshears grips tight the reins of her voice, bending the edges of melody in ways that wrap beauty in a veil of unease. On "All Will Be New" she paints a scene of poetic eeriness, where insistent piano and rhythm build hypnotically into an otherworldly groove as turbulent textures float in and out of frame.
Breshears came to music early; taking up piano at four, she left that for a classical voice career until "I went to college for singing and realized I hated opera" she laughs. She took up orchestral harp instead and simultaneously rediscovered her voice on the piano. In 2015, Breshears started a project combining turn of millennium R&B and elements of Debussy and Ravel, finding a sound close to triphop. Sheers, the band she fronts with Daniel Rossi (drums) and Aaron Stern (bass/synth/guitar), is her creative outlet. "My 'day jobs' are now being a classical singer, pianist, and harpist, which I love" she explains. "Playing in bands is generally the cherry on top of being a classical musician."Videos
