Today, Belgian's Selah Sue reveals a striking new video for "Reason", the title song of her upcoming album, via FADER HERE. The video director Tim Erem created Rihanna's "Work" and Major Lazer's "Lean On" video's as well.
Selah Sue talked to FADER about the song and video. "In times of sadness, strong negative emotions, I'll call out to my sense of Reason. It tells me to hold on and assures me it will get better in time. Because it always does. This song is written to myself and everyone else feeling hopeless sometimes. "Reason" look at them and tell 'em what to do !"
Five years after her impressive European multi-platinum debut, acclaimed singer/songwriter Selah Sue returns on June 3rd with the ethereal and emotionally intricate second LP, Reason via Because Music. Striking the perfect balance between delicate and powerful, Reason expertly fuses the sounds of electro-soul with the languor of trip hop and verve of house beats, marking the discovery of Selah Sue's true musical identity. VICE's Noisey premiered the video "Alone" and announced the album news HERE and the album is available for pre-sale HERE.
"I didn't want to lose the immediate and uncluttered quality of my songs, but I wanted them to be more elaborate, more ethereal also. I didn't want my voice to be alone anymore".
Described by Selah as "an equation with many variables", Reason is the epitome of the phrase. Recorded in several studios across Belgium, London,
Jamaica and Los Angeles, Reason features collaborations with the industry's most sought after producers including Rhye's Robin Hannibal (Little Dragon, The Internet, Kendrick Lamar), Ludwig Goransson (HAIM, Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper), Matt Schwartz (Massive Attack) and Troy Taylor (Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin).
Filled with shimmering synths and an honest, playful chord progression over a hip-hop percussion, Selah's first ever love song "Together" finds its seat early on in the track list. Recorded and co-written with Childish Gambino, it was completed in just a few hours. Unapologetically exposed, Selah describes how "the melody came straight from my gut".
Although a diversity of styles and sounds, Reason is a remarkably cohesive body of work that speaks volumes on talent - firmly putting
Selah Sue in the "Ones to Watch" category for 2016 and beyond.
