New Jersey DIY-punk trio Screaming Females' sixth LP Rose Mountain will be released today, February 24 on Don Giovanni Records. Setting out with a crystal clear vision to create songs both concise and melodic, the band explores a more streamlined sound, pushing vocal melodies and lyrical themes to the forefront. Known for their raw intensity when performing live, the band will launch a massive international tour this month through May, including album release shows in San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia and New York.
Less than a week away from the highly anticipated Rose Mountain, the now palpable excitement continues to build. The LP is streaming this week in full with NPR's First Listen, who proclaim, "these songs channel the spirit of punk, but also the density of heavy rock that's had the fat cut out." Meanwhile, SPIN went behind the journey to the LP, featuring the trio in their first cover story of 2015. Spending time out on town and in rehearsal with the band in addition to interviewing producer Matt Bayles and Don Giovanni Records head Joe Steinhardt, the unanimous conclusion seems to be that these punks are going places without sacrificing an iota of their character or talent.
Formed in 2005, Screaming Females is singer/guitarist Marissa Paternoster, bassistMichael Abbate and drummer Jarrett Dougherty. The New Jersey DIY-punk trio self-produced their previous releases (with Steve Albini engineering their 2012 LP Ugly and the 2014 concert album Live at the Hideout) but overturned the long-standing, self-imposed rule this time by bringing in Matt Bayles (Mastodon, the Sword) as a producer.
