Theatre Within, the grassroots non-profit behind the Annual John Lennon Tribute charity concert since 1981, will honor acclaimed singer-songwriter and country music legend Rosanne Cash as the fifth recipient of the "John Lennon Real Love Award" at its 38th Annual John Lennon Tribute on Friday, November 30 at Symphony Space, NYC.
Ms. Cash, who will play a set of her favorite John Lennon and Beatles classics, said, "In songwriting, in activism and in trying to live a fearless life, I can't begin to count the times I've thought to myself, 'What would John do?' I am deeply honored to receive the John Lennon Real Love Award from Theatre Within."
In a statement, Yoko Ono said, "Rosanne Cash, with her passionate voice as an artist and activist, has enriched American folk and country music traditions, while speaking out against gun violence and urging her fellow country musicians to take a stand for gun control. These are values that John would truly embrace and I think it is beautiful that Theatre Within is honoring Rosanne with this year's John Lennon Real Love Award."
In addition to Ms. Cash, the Tribute will feature performances by Grammy Award-winner Marc Cohn, sixties icon Jesse Colin Young (the Youngbloods), Willie Nile, Deva Mahal and Rich Pagano (Fab Faux), who is returning as Music Director for the tenth year. More artists will be announced.
The Tribute will also feature a multi-artist celebration of "Lennon '68," spotlighting John Lennon's memorable contributions to The White Album such as "Dear Prudence," "Julia" and "Revolution."
Proceeds from the Tribute will support Theatre Within's ongoing free workshops in creative expression and mindfulness for those whose lives have been impacted by cancer at Gilda's Club NYC. Programs include the John Lennon Real Love Project, a songwriting workshop for children who have lost a parent and adult cancer survivors.
"John Lennon's legacy does not mean anything unless it inspires us to have a positive impact in the world," said Tribute creator and producer, Joe Raiola. "With her artistry and activism, Rosanne Cash is doing just that."
