Performers struggling to find their place in the world are getting a helping hand to cut through the noise and make their mark, thanks to Australian-born, Nashville-based creative genius Rick Caballo. Rick is one of the minds behind ultra-creative management company Dead Horse Branding, award-winning rock fashion label Corello, and the recently launched Derailed Development, which offers straight up solutions for start-ups, or those Artist's struggling to break through to the next level.
Rick explains, "I see the same problem happening time and time again artists trying to break through and 'make it' without taking the time to build a solid foundation. In the music business today agents, labels and even management, want to see that artists have an established brand before investing their own time and money into you. This means the branding responsibility is now on the individual. Today an artist has a shorter shelf-life, so in order to give it your best shot, your brand better be tight on all levels - visually and sonically - before you pull the trigger."
In his role as Head of Creative for Dead Horse Branding and Derailed Development, Caballo oversees art direction, logo creation, website development, merchandise design and all the visual elements that contribute to a strong brand identity. Rick's unique eye, artistic talent and enviable problem solving skills are the perfect formula that lets him encapsulate the essence of a brand, and effectively convey that to audiences.
"If your base isn't right, all that follows won't work either. You can't expect 1+1=3. One of the reasons our approach works so well is because we dig deep, strategize, prioritize and streamline everything. We mix design and help you get the math right to create a foolproof brand identity. Once that aspect is complete then we move into publicity and selling the brand"
Getting in at the ground level and defining an artist's identity before the music is even being created also helps make for a stronger brand. One expert who understands this and has teamed up with Rick and his creative team is Kent Wells a talented, acclaimed producer and musician best known for his work with Dolly Parton.
"Working with Rick improves my creative process," said Wells. "When the artist has a brand/image and direction it helps me as the producer to choose the right songs and steer the music clearly. All team members have a better shot at hitting the target when a solid branding foundation is built. Rick's from a musical background - he 'gets it'".
Caballo understands what it takes to be a success better than most, thanks to his extensive experience as an accomplished singer-songwriter, commercial artist, fashion designer, photographer and graphic designer. As the owner of multiple successful businesses with partner Melissa Core, he's learned plenty of valuable branding lessons first-hand.
In addition to shaping new talent, Rick is also working on a coffee table book documenting the life and influence of iconic music producer, Tony Brown. After sharing the stage with The King, Elvis Presley in the 1970s, Brown went on to become one of the most influential and respected producers in the business, and has been responsible for more than 100 #1 hits. Rick has spent more than a year photographing and interviewing many of the incredible artists whom Brown has worked with including (Mel, need you guys to throw in who Rick has shot here, as I know you both have done sessions). He's also designed, co-written and art-directed the forthcoming book, which is undergoing finishing touches.
Keep an eye on this guy, there are exciting things to come.
