Albertina Walker died today in Chicago after a battle with emphysema. She was 81 years old. Hailed as the Queen of Gospel, Walker was known for forming the Caravans, the popular gospel act in the '50s that helped launch the careers of artists such as Inez Andrews, Shirley Caesar, James Cleveland, and Cassietta George. The group's classic recordings include songs such as "Blessed Assurance," "Mary Don't You Weep," "Soldiers In The Army," and "Solid Rock." As a solo artist, Walker won a GRAMMY for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album in 1994 for Songs Of The Church - Live In Memphis.
GRAMMY® winner Albertina Walker was an extraordinary artist whose musical gift was matched by her unselfish commitment to humanity. An honoree at our first GRAMMY Salute To Gospel Music® event in 2005, her career has spanned more than five decades and has seen the release of more than 60 albums, earning her a well-deserved recognition as "the Queen of Gospel." The gospel music world has lost one of its great pioneers, but her legacy lives on in her soulful voice that has touched so many. Our deepest sympathies extend to her family, friends, and all who were moved by her music. -
