Portland Ovations presents American composer Paul Dresher and his ensemble performing works by Martin Bresnick, Sam Adams and Dresher himself at 7:30pm on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center.
Fresh, inventive, and hip, the Paul Dresher Double Duo performs exciting and visually compelling music that The Los Angeles Times calls a "chamber music tour de force." Conventional notions of instrumentation and composition are turned on its ear by two duos performing on both "old" and new instruments: Bang on a Can All Stars founding member Lisa Moore on piano, and Karen Bentley Pollick on violin are paired with a Marimba Lumina played by percussionist Joel Davel, and a Quadrachord, a 15-foot long guitar-like stringed instrument invented by Dresher. Double Duo combines the traditional with the unexpected to create a wholly unique live performance experience that is both visual and aural.
One hour prior to the performance (6:30pm) at Westbrook Performing Arts Center, Ovations Offstage offers a pre-performance lecture Rethinking Tradition with Bill Matthews, Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music at Bates College discussing the tradition of non-traditional musical pairings in cutting edge American music.
On October 22nd, Paul Dresher will give a masterclass at the USM School of Music for USM School of Music students. Audience members who would like to observe the class are welcomed.
Tickets for Paul Dresher Ensemble: Double Duo are $33 for Ovations' Members and $36 for the general public and a limited amount of $10 "Student Deal" tickets are also available.
