Young the Giant rocked the iHeartRadio Theater Los Angeles last night with a live performance for the iHeartRadio Live Series. The show, hosted by Alt 98.7's Trey Morgan, featured an intimate Q&A, discussing their new album "Mind Over Matter." The event broadcasted live on-air as a 30-minute special on Clear Channel ALT and AAA radio stations, with a 60-minute live video stream online across station websites and iHeartRadio.com. The performance featured seven songs from "Mind Over Matter" including: The title track, "Mind Over Matter," "Slow Dive," "Anagram," "It's About Time," "Teachers," "Waves," and "Firelight." For the full set list, see below.
Trey opened the Q&A asking the band about their world tour, their upcoming tour with Kings of Leon and going to Lollapalooza. Sameer talked to the audience about trying to find time sightseeing and enjoying the places they were traveling to while on the road.
They also discussed creating the album and the process behind writing the songs. Before performing "It's About Time," Trey asked Sameer about writing the song. He said that they rent a house (Their 5th house) to write, and this song just came together quickly one day. When they originally wrote it, it was a stripped down version of a rock song. When they took it into the studio they made it a "banger."
Trey also talked to the band about what they were doing following their three and a half years on the road?
According to the band, their first couple of months were spent "screwing" around. Since they had been on the road for three and a half years, Sameer told everyone that it took a little bit of time to get their land legs back.
The last part of the Q&A was spent discussing creating the album.
The band wanted the album to be natural, and didn't want to over think anything, or have it feel stressed. The record is about getting over the mental stress and overcoming our obstacles.
For them, the song "Mind Over Matter" is what broke down the barriers and got them through a case of writers block. The way the song came together was a different process, it was organized and made sense. Usually they go into the studio and just see what comes out.
Before closing out the show, Sameer told the audience "Sometimes tuning out is the most important thing you can do as a human being."
