Peri Mauer will premiere today, January 21, 2014 at 8:00 PM at St. Peter's Church, 619 Lexington Ave. at 54th St., New York, NY 10022. The piece is called AT HOME WITH ALLEN GINSBERG: Five Songs for Baritone and Piano. Peri Mauer is the composer. Daniel Neer is the baritone and Christopher Berg is the pianist. This performance is the World Premiere.

Composer Peri Mauer's new work, AT HOME WITH ALLEN GINSBERG: Five Songs for Baritone and Piano, is inspired by the timbre and rhythm of Allen Ginsberg reading poetry (as posted on YouTube videos), which served as motifs to work off of and develop in the writing of these songs. The collection is quite varied, tied together by universality of life experience articulated by my own sense of modern life spirit.
The song titles are:
1. At Home With Allen Ginsberg (based on the rhythms and timbre of Allen Ginsberg reading his own poem "The Lion For Real")
2. Sunset (about a little 5 year old boy, a neighbor, who died of neuroblastoma, with some of the text based on his father's blog)
3. Blueberry Candles (based on a native American tale about an old man quietly facing the end of life)
4. This Just in... (based on the murder of
John Lennon, drawing some material of newspaper articles from the time)
5. 23G vs HPD (about a battle between a saxophone-playing neighbor and the management of the midtown apartment building he lived in about his practicing.)
ABOUT PERI MAUER:
PERI MAUER, COMPOSER: MM, BM Manhattan School of Music, BA Bard College, graduate of the High School of Music and Art, has composed works for solo instruments, chamber music ensembles, orchestra, and theater. Flea Theater, DUTCHESS STARLIGHT REVISITED for cello, trombone, and electric guitar in Composers Concordance
Festival at DROM (for which she was also cellist), among others.
Upcoming performances include new works she is developing for performance with the ensemble Eight Strings and a Whistle and the LaGuardia High School Junior Band. She has received grants for her work from New Music USA Composer's Assistance Program, Meet the Composer, Composers Guild of Utah, and National Federation of Music Clubs.
Also a professional cellist and conductor, she has performed with such groups as
American Symphony Orchestra in
Carnegie Hall. Encompass New Opera Theater in Alice Tully Hall,
Radio City Music Hall Orchestra, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Astoria Symphony,
Playwrights Horizons, NYU Contemporary Players, Prospect Theater Company, Manhattan Contemporary Ensemble, American Chamber Opera, The Chelsea Symphony, etc., and has held the position of assistant conductor of
Redeemer Arts Chamber Orchestra in NYC.
