2013 marks the 21st anniversary of the passing of Astor Piazzolla, the great Argentine composer who innovated and renewed the tango tradition. As a tribute, two of the best and most renowned young ensembles that have been influenced by his music gather on the Bass Concert Hall stage to honor their great "maestro" in this U.S. premiere. For this special performance, all seating will be on the stage with the artists.

Escalandrum, led by Daniel "Pipi" Piazzolla, grandson of the great Astor, is a jazz sextet that perfectly embodies today's pulsating jazz scene in Argentina. In 2011, Escalandrum was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album with their latest release Piazzolla plays Piazzolla, a revision of classic Piazzolla works.

After 21 years, La Camorra continues Piazzolla´s legacy, working to create a new and contemporary tango based in the quality of its musicians, the profound knowledge of the genre and its history, together with the richness of their own original works. "Piazzolla is in the best hands [with La Camorra]," (Diario El País, Spain).

This performance is presented by Texas Performing Arts' Artes Américas program.
