11/1,8,15,22, @ 9:30 Annie Ross Annie Ross: "Ms. Ross is a master class in how to sing jazz inside out, upside and down......Her sense of time and rhythm will fracture you...." ~ Rex Reed Annie Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. The following are some highlights of what has been a long and illustrious career in jazz: Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", quot;Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. Annie Ross toured in the 50's with the extraordinary Lionel Hampton band that included Art Farmer, Clifford Brown, Gigi Gryce, and Quincy Jones. Ms. Ross has recorded with James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Milt Jackson, Harry Sweets Edison, the Count Basie band, Louis Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Chet Baker and many more. In this variety of settings, she became known as a great jazz singer, masterful at ballads and up tempos, with the ability to swing hard, improvise and make every lyric meaningful and revealing. As a child, Annie Ross entered a talent show on the radio accompanied by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, which resulted an a six-month contract with MGM. She went to Hollywood at age eight where she appeared in "The Little Rascals" singing a jazz version of "Loch Lomond." At age eleven she appeared as Judy Garland's sister in "Presenting Lily Mars." At age 14 she composed the song "Let's Fly", which was subsequently recorded by Johnny Mercer and Jo Stafford. In Paris in the late 40's, she met up with musicians involved in modern jazz, including James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Billy Strayhorn, and displayed an unerring ear and savvy sense of harmony, which was much appreciated. At 19, she recorded "Le Vent Vert" with Moody. Back in the U.S. at age 21 she recorded for Savoy, along witH Clarke, Milt Jackson and Percy Heath. She worked on 52nd St. with Max Roach, Tommy Potter and George Wallington and subbed for Billie Holiday at the Apollo Theater. The original recordings of "Twisted" and "Farmer's Market" were done in 1952 with Wallington on piano and Art Blakey on drums. Annie Ross has continued to bring the essence of jazz to a broad spectrum of listeners internationally, by touring, through her recordings, conducting workshops, writing, and appearances in film, television and radio. Currently, Annie Ross is living in New York and is still active as a jazz performer, having recently performed in New York, Scotland, and Spain as well as having recorded a new CD, Let Me Sing.. Annie Ross 2011 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT MAC AWARD $25
11/2,6,7 @ 7:00 PM Yvonne Constant The Tony-Award-winning actress Yvonne Constant premieres a brand new club act, ‘LA DIFFÉRENCE', in her sixth Metropolitan Room engagement. With her long-time music director Russ Kassoff on piano, Constant artfully explores the cultural differences between France and America as she liberally indulges her twin passions - popular song from the 50's, 60's and70's from both sides of the Atlantic.
In his review of Constant's previous show last May, Stephen Holden of The New York Times called her "an ageless beauty (...) whose approach to songs is wise, knowing and dry." Writing in Opera News in December, Brian Kellow called ‘PARIS IN THE 60s and 70s' "one of the finest cabaret acts I've ever experienced (...) an absolutely singular nightclub performance."$20

11/3,10 @7:00 PM Sue Mathys A musical theatre and concert star in German-speaking Europe, Sue Mathys is far from your traditional German import. Her success performing in the U.S. since her American concert debut at Carnegie Hall in 2008, hinges on her thorough embrace of American musical traditions. The Swiss-born actress and singer, who received a thunderous ovation in her first appearance at the Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at Lincoln Center last year, just concluded a run of "Gypsy" at the Lyric Stage in Irving Texas to rave reviews.$20
11/3 ,6 ,9 @ 9:30 PM Kathleen France Kathleen France returns to the Metropolitan Room stage in BOOK OF

LOVE: CHAPTER 2 ACOUSTICALLY DYSFUNCTIONAL, further pursuing herquest to learn all about, and to find, true love.
A sequel to her
original BOOK OF LOVE cabaret debut show, nominated for a 2010 MAC
Award, which focused on learning everything she could about love
through reading books on the subway, she has come to the realization
in Chapter 2 that maybe these fairy tales aren't all they're cracked
up to be. Perhaps acquiring knowledge about matters of the heart
through book smarts is only one part of the equation. Love is not an
easy road to travel. Maybe we need to rely on street smarts as well.
How do we recognize love's warning signs? And how do we avoid those
pesky road blocks we see up ahead before our relationship turns into a
dead end? Featuring Sean Harkness as Music Director and Guitarist,
Kathleen strips down some of her favorite songs while continuing her
journey towards love -- baggage and all! Stop, look, and listen
before proceeding!$15

11/5, 6, 19, 20 @ 4:00 PM Cathy Taylor

"Laughter, music and musings. Oh yes, she's going there! Cathy
courageously and insanely confronts the big denoument we all have in
common. The elephant in the room. The other sure thing in life
(obviously not taxes).
Cathy Taylor: A native Texan, I grew up in the land of big hair, beauty pageants, firearms and cheerleading. I've been a high school teacher, a bank teller, a waitress, a corporate cashier, a store clerk and a temp. I've worked in the corporate world ? everything from answering phones to moving money. I've been a singer, a comic, an actress, a writer and a dreamer. I run. I write. I sing. I worry. Ironically, moving to NYC from Texas took me off the stage and away from performing... for awhile. I lived through my own musical-theatre period, detoured through stand up comedy only to end up doing hybrid cabaret. Insane emotional road trips have driven me through numerous fallow periods of no performing... just life. Turns out, those have been my most-fertile times as an artist. I've lived through 9/11, blizzards and black-outs. I started distance running when I hit middle age, zealously running toward some things and running away from others. I completed seven of the world's top-ten marathons (yes, an entire 26.2 miles). Though not particularly fast, I finishEd Strong every time. Ironically, I found no answers... just more questions. Driven, but mostly clueless, about my destination. Many detours and many adventures! $25

Their unique juxtaposition of modern, techno-socio-relevant lyrics and tune-smithy jazz piano arrangements will charm your socks off. If that doesn't then the Justin Bieber references and the strip tease will.$25

11/13 @ 4:00 PM Eunis Pulous "THE WIT & THE WAIF"
The Coincidental Lives of Cole Porter and Edith Piaf
Polar opposites in life as well as in music, Cole Porter and Edith Piaf seemed
perfectly suited for a study in contrasts. His music of sophistication and wit
against her dark songs of street life and struggle. His wealth and
privilege - her poverty and neglect. His life with the 'swells' and
her avoidance of them. But as their stories emerged, an eerie number
of coincidental, shared experiences began to pile up - too many to be
ignored. Very unexpectedly, the contrasts
began to blur...$20
