The writing team of the new musical Freedom's Song have released their first single onto iTunes this week. The writers Caleb Collins and Alison Holman have started crowd funding efforts to continue production of the musical, which recently had a sold-out and extended engagement at 'The West End' (formerly The Underground) in concert reading format.
The show was presented by the N.E.W. Musicals Concert Series and was produced by John Forslund and JD Productions. All performances received great acclaim and the team is currently planning an industry reading sometime this year slated to star Jennifer Hope Wills (The Phantom of the Opera; Wonderful Town), who is also featured on the show's demo recording.
The released song 'You Are Human', which has continuously been a crowd favorite, is performed by Collins, a popular gospel recording artist himself. The song, which celebrates human rights, has beenre-arranged to feature Collin's jazz infused style, which he has used on several solo projects includingthe albums 'Classic', 'Dream' and 'Christmas' (all out on iTunes). All proceeds from sales of 'You Are Human' will go directly towards funding the future of the show.
Freedom's Song is an interracial love story set against the back drop of the Civil War era with a book and almost two dozen original songs by Holman and Collins, who initially wrote the show at age 16. This is the first single from the show to be released to the public. Collins is currently working on a new solo project of jazz standards and Holman is currently the musical director of the Broadway bound 'Ghostlight' by Tim Realbuto and Matthew Martin which heads into workshops this coming fall after three successful industry readings.
