You won't see singers Grant Maloy Smith and EmiSunshine in their new Christmas music video "Fly Possum Fly." Instead, Smith decided to use the cartoon-like characters from his children's book, which is based on the song.
"I've gotten such great reactions about the illustrations, that it seemed right to honor the book by using them in the music video," he said.
"Fly Possum Fly" is about possums that save Christmas by pulling Santa's sleigh, after
Rudolph comes down with the flu. Smith wrote the song and invited teen country music sensation EmiSunshine to sing lead vocals on the record.
"When we were in the studio, I felt like I had gone back in time and was singing with a
14 year-old Dolly Parton," Smith said. "Emi has that kind of voice, that caliber of talent,
and such a sparkling personality."
The singer/songwriter struck a book deal with Headline Books, Inc., a West Virginia-
based publisher, to release a picture book, based on the song. Smith, who has a
background in art as well as music, illustrated the 32-page book with colorful possum
characters and, of course, Santa and his reindeer.
"The concept of the song may seem silly, but it's so clever," EmiSunshine said. "It's
informative and funny at the same time. Who knew possums had 50 teeth!"
The book version of "Fly Possum Fly" has just received a Gold award from the Mom's
Choice Awards, an international organization that evaluates a wide range of family-
friendly products, including books.
"When I first wrote 'Fly Possum Fly,' it was just for fun," Smith said. "I am honored that
both the book and the song are being so well-received." "Fly Possum Fly," the book, is available at Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, Walmart.com and other digital outlets. The song is available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and other digital outlets.
