New Mexico's ¡Globalquerque! Kicks Off 2013 Lineup Today

AMP Concerts and Avokado Artists present ¡Globalquerque! - New Mexico's 9th Annual Celebration of World Music and Culture today, September 20th at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th St SW. Gates open at 4 pm, with music starting around 6 and running until 11:30 pm. Festival opens with the legendary Leon Russell! And on Saturday, September 21st at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Gates open at 10:30 am for the free Global Fiesta. Evening ticketed concerts start at around 6 and run until 11:30 pm.

Tom Russell is best known as a folk and country singer with a personal storytelling approach to his songwriting, but his past is checkered with interesting events that defy his country music roots, including his receiving a degree in criminology, teaching school in Nigeria, and playing music for a Puerto Rican circus. Russell's latest release, "Aztec Jazz" (2013), was recorded as a live concert in Halden, Norway with the world-renown 32-piece Norwegian Wind Ensemble. Tom continues to redefine the meaning of "Americana" music and the art of singer-songwriting.

Called "the future of tango" by Argentina-based tango teacher and author Gustavo Benzacry Saba, who added that "they sound better than some of the bands in Buenos Aires," Albuquerque's own QTango has quickly gained recognition for its high level of musicianship and original approach to tango music. Every QTango performance is sophisticated, engaging, nostalgic, and moving, with a rich sensuality that must be experienced live to truly be appreciated. This is a great way for people to get warmed up for our October Tango performance at the NHCC!

Having built their act from years of touring together (first with the band Siucra, then as a duo), Matt and Shannon have grown into thoroughly entertaining performers. They bring to the stage a depth of shared experience and a love for Irish music; their stage banter is comfortable, often hilarious.

Te Amo, Argentina is an exotic audio-visual journey that draws audiences into the heart of Argentina and its fascinating, diverse culture. This multi-media performance features music from the Latin Grammy award-winning album "Antonio Lysy at the Broad - Music from Argentina" and one of the top tango couples in the world-Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo (Gold Medal winners on NBC's "Superstars of Dance" and choreographers on Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance"). From the Amerindian rhythms of the Andes Mountains to the city-street cafés of Buenos Aires, the combination of music and dance performances weaves together a pulsating and inspiring homage to Argentina.

After years of study in Chicago, and many nights of music in Clare, Galway, and their adopted home of Boston, Irish Music Magazine's John O'Regan wrote of Matt and Shannon Heaton, "their duet playing is tight, sweet, and tasteful, lacking nothing on either technical expertise or instrumental virtuosity." The Heatons' music comes from a traditional aesthetic and a passion for reaching out to the modern world around them. They are devoted to Irish traditional music and uplift listeners by connecting with each other and the people around them.

Driving gypsy jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass and violin lay the foundation for mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic stories. It's theatrical and humorous. It's musical and intense. It entertains, dazzles and defies classification while welcoming the spectator to join the band throughout the performance in momentary fits of claps, snaps and sing-alongs. Kris Delmhorst is adventurous, refined, lucid, and haunting. Jeffrey Foucault's songs are tersely elegant, set apart by moody imagery and weather-beaten cool. Together, these singer-songwriters unite on stage for an evening of solos and duets. They've both carved out fine individual careers with over a dozen albums released between them. The evening will start with a live on-stage interview by Art of the Song hosts John Dillon and Vivian Nesbitt.
