New Hilty/McPhee SMASH Duet Premieres

A new duet featuring the two tremendously talented leading ladies from NBC's musical drama series SMASH has now been released with Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee joining up on a cover of the rousing slow-burner "That's Life".

"That's Life" was performed most famously by Frank Sinatra and was written by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon, though it was first recorded by Marion Montgomery.

Subsequently, the catchy jazz and blues-flecked tune has been covered by a wide array of performers, including Bono, Michael Buble, Russell Watson and Alan Cumming.

"I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a queen," sings Hilty as scrappy Broadway stalwart Ivy Lynn and McPhee as relative theatre newcomer Karen. Never more applicable lyrics could either character sing at this stage of the game - at least besides the ones specially penned for them by SMASH songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, that is.

"Some people get their kicks stepping on a dream," sings Karen - before adding an off-handed and jokingly accusatory "Ivy!" into the mix.

Yet, this is a rare respite, with the dueling divas joining together for a fleeting moment - and they milk it for everything it is worth and then some.
