NBC News reports that Neil Diamond plans to write a new song inspired by the tragedy at last week's Boston Marathon. The singer/songwriter's hit tune 'Sweet Caroline' has become an unofficial theme song for the Boston Red Sox baseball team. On Saturday, Diamond appeared live at Fenway Park and sang his song in honor of the victims of the bombings.
The singer tells Rolling Stone Magazine, "I'm writing now and obviously affected by this situation in Boston, so I'm writing about it just to express myself." He also shared that the song will include lyrics describing other recent events such as the shootings in Aurora, Colorado and Newtown, Connecticut. "It's like an infestation, and I'm writing about the general situation, not just about this bombing in Boston, but what we're going through with all of these tragedies - shootings and so on and so forth," he says.
No details have been given as to the title or the release date of the new material but Diamond tells NBC that he hopes to have the song out as soon as possible. "I spent the whole day recording it and I will spend tomorrow recording it. With a little bit of help from the man upstairs, I'll have it finished by the weekend."
Diamond's recent albums have included collaborations with Rick Rubin (2005's "12 Songs" and 2008's chart-topping "Home Before Dark"), a Christmas album, which included three original songs, and "Dreams," a collection of cover tunes.
