NYC-ARTS Spotlights Ghetto Film School, A Program Bringing Arts Education to Students Image

On February 1, NYC-ARTS presents a profile of Ghetto Film School (GFS), a non-profit located in the Bronx, and founded to educate, develop and celebrate the next generation of great American storytellers. The program identifies young talent from local communities and provides them with the access, opportunity and resources to pursue creative careers. With locations in both New York City and Los Angeles, and support from major studios in Hollywood, GFS equips students for top universities and careers in the creative industries.

Beyond its connections in Hollywood, the school is partnering with world renowned cultural institutions including The Frick Collection, located on New York's Upper East Side. The Frick, a museum with holdings of paintings by major European artists, as well as numerous works of fine sculpture, porcelain and furniture, may appear a surprising alliance for GFS. However over a three year partnership, The Frick provided GFS students with both inspiration and a location for their storytelling. The partnership is helping to expand The Frick's mission of reaching a new audience, and sending the message that the museum experience is for everyone.

"We are excited to spotlight Ghetto Film School and its partnership with The Frick Collection," said Joan Hershey, Editorial Director of the series. "We are inspired by the collaboration of these organizations. This remarkable celebration of diversity and varied life experience will help to the next generation of talent in our community."

NYC-ARTS, THIRTEEN's weekly arts and culture multi-platform showcase, brings arts lovers an all-access pass to the interesting, unusual and unique cultural offerings of the greater New York City region. This region is also home to some of the world's most talented and promising artists. This month, the series features a story about an organization nurturing nascent talent, regardless of specific socioeconomic backgrounds.

Co-hosted by New York Emmy Award winners Philippe de Montebello and Paula Zahn, with events around town reported by Christina Ha, NYC-ARTS showcases both world-renowned and local, community-based arts organizations.
