North by Northeast (NXNE) is happy to announce the Canadian premiere screening of Asif Kapadia's Amy, more stellar music programming, and a new location for NXNE's Festival Hub overflowing with exclusive performances, fireside chats, and must-see shindigs running June 17 - 21, 2015.
NXNE will present the Canadian premiere of Amy at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema on Saturday, June 20. This haunting documentary by Asif Kapadia, which recently had it's world premiere at Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of Amy Winehouse in her own words through archive footage and previously unreleased tracks.
NXNE has confirmed performances by Copenhagen's eccentric sound sculptor HVAD, experimental club DJ Rabit, signed to Tri Angle Records, Dominick Fernow's project Prurient at the Pitchfork showcase at Berkeley Church, and rising Toronto rapper Jazz Cartier has been added to The FADER's presentation of Rae Sremmurd at Danforth Music Hall.
The new NXNE Hub at 170 Spadina Avenue, will morph throughout the festival dates from a social hangout, to comedy club, to movie house, to art gallery.
Programming includes:
- An intimate talk with Andy Cohn, President and Publisher of The FADER
- Performances by stand-up comedians Eric Andre, as seen on The Eric Andre Show, Man Seeking Woman, and 2 Broke Girls, and Nick Thune, known for his eight Tonight Show appearances
- Canadian premiere film screenings of Diamond Tongues, a dramatic comedic film about Toronto hipster Edith Welland trying to find an acting job and herself; Industrial Soundtrack For The Urban Decay, a documentary about the origins of Industrial music; and Jonathan Demme's Made in Texas, a collection of six short films from Austin followed by a discussion hosted by SXSW co-founder Louis Black.
- A massive exhibit of hand-printed band posters from Austin's National Poster Retrospecticus tour, with posters for bands such as METZ, Jack White, Wilco and more, by artists including Aaron Draplin, Daniel Danger, and Toronto-based design studio Doublenaut
