Today NPR's First Listen has offered up an advance play of Shakey Graves' forthcoming full-length album Can't Wake Up, which will be released May 4 on Dualtone Records. The new record takes a progressive turn from Alejandro Rose-Garcia's, aka Shakey Graves, traditional sound.
"Armed with new instruments and a lifetime of dreams, he forgoes his boot-stomping, cheeky folk for a sound that fluctuates between finely-tuned rock and full-band pop," comments NPR's Nina Corcoran. "Alejandro Rose-Garcia pulls it off in large part due to his storytelling prowess; these songs would be welcoming, even enthralling, in any style."
Last month, Shakey GRAVES performed the unreleased "Cops and Robbers" on NPR's Night Owl during SXSW in his hometown Austin, TX. Night Owl has since released his live performance of "Counting Sheep". Both videos are quickly approaching 500,000 views each. On April 7, he performed "Dining Alone" and "Cops and Robbers" on 'Live From Here with Chris Thile'.
Shakey GRAVES recently shared the newest track "Mansion Door" by way of Consequence of Sound's 'Origins' feature, where he offered some background perspective on the foundation of the song, explaining that the song stylistically stems from his love for mid-late 90's indie bands. Writer Ben Kaye furthered that sentiment, adding "the nods to Heatmiser and Built to Spill are evident in the song's journey from the comfortable nighttime mosey of the verses to the ringing, layered vocals of the finale."
"Mansion Door" is the third song out from Can't Wake Up, following tracks "Counting Sheep" and "Kids These Days", shared as The Sleep EP.
Shakey GRAVES is currently on the start of his headlining tour with sold out shows in Brooklyn, Boston, DC, Philadelphia, Toronto, Chicago and others, climaxing with a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison (Denver, CO). Festival dates include performances at BottleRock, Sasquatch, Pickathon, and Arroyo Seco Weekend.
