New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presents Lyrics from Lockdown tonight, January 24, 2015 at 7:30 PM in the Victoria Theater. Get your tickets now at NJPAC.org or 888.GO.NJPAC (888.466.5722)
This unbelievably true story begins when Bain, a hip-hop theater innovator from Brooklyn, is wrongly imprisoned in New York City jails -- while studying law at Harvard.
Weaving together the voices of more than 40 characters, Bain's critically acclaimed show uses a live band and video DJ. The production fuses hip-hop, theater, spoken word poetry, R&B, calypso and classical music to tell a provocative story that exposes racial profiling and wrongful incarceration in a nation that imprisons more people than any other in the world.
Bryonn Bain (60 Minutes, BET's My Two Cents) is founder of the grassroots organization Blackout Arts Collective, which developed the annual Lyrics From Lockdown Tour, reaching prisons in 25 states and spawning a series of university courses that use the arts to teach critical literacy in correctional facilities. He is the author of The Village Voice cover story "Walking While Black" and the book The Ugly Side of Beautiful: Rethinking Race and Prisons in America.
Recommended for ages 14-plus.
