My Chemical Romance Features Trans Am in New Video

New Jersey-bred rock band My Chemical Romance have cast a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am as the star of the video for their high-octane new single "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)." The automobile that appears in the video was beautifully restored by "car hunter" Dennis McCarthy, best known for his work on The Fast and the Furious and Deathrace.

The band's frontman, Gerard Way, is a Trans Am obsessive and felt that featuring the car in their video would perfectly encapsulate the song, which appears on the band's upcoming fourth studio album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

"Trans Ams are special to me because I was fascinated with them as a boy," says Way. "They were the first cars I actually thought were cool. The Trans Am is a muscle car that has always symbolized freedom to me, and I was definitely a little bit metal-head. Plus, it has a T-Top for easy rocket-launching ability, which we definitely needed for the video."

As Way told Spin Magazine last year: "Aesthetically or fictionally, the album has these feelings of being a 15-year-old kid at the Jersey Shore, trying to win a Motley Crue mirror or an Iron Maiden hat, from that era when heavy metal was yet to become hair rock."

Back in March 2009, Way posted a message on the band's website (www.mychemicalromance.com) saying that he needed to procure a 1979 Trans Am for "research and exploration," explaining that "it doesn't need to have been kept in an airtight garage for 30 years, but I would prefer something that's not a piece of s." He also specified that he did not want a car that looked like that "frigging Smokey and The Bandit car - that s is wack."

The car featured in the video was purchased on eBay and restored by McCarthy and his team. The paint job was done by Marc Dupre at Jack's Auto Body and the engine work was done by DamIan Smith, both of Los Angeles. Other art direction and video design was by Way, along with band members Frank Iero, Ray Toro, and Mikey Way, as well as Matt Taylor and Jonathan Rivera.

Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys will be released by Reprise Records on November 22nd, 2010.
