Based on Biblical texts, A German Requiem is referred to as the central work of Brahms's career. This piece has been the subject of numerous debates musically and historically. It developed from a choral piece to a cantata to a seven-movement Requiem and rather than focusing on those who have died like most Requiem masses, Brahms' Requiem focuses much more on the living. This work of unusual significance includes reoccurring themes of humanity and hope.
