Montreal-based band CAIN today released its first album, Between Eden and Paradise, an exquisite musical journey into the roots of rock and roll, its evocative lyrics cutting a path back to the genre's original idealism.
Fred Shahrabani, the album's songwriter, began recording songs at an age long after most songwriters have laid down their pen. Inspired by the social consciousness and idealism of the original rock and roll generation, he set out to create a body of work that addresses our time's greatest hopes and challenges.
"Through these songs, I'm thrilled to have collaborated with such great musicians. I hope that lovers of rock will find this an album worthy of those who inspired us, and equal to the task we set forth, that is, to reflect through music, both the wondrous beauty surrounding us and the daunting challenges facing our world today."
The 12 songs on the album are alternately exciting and wistful, with a definitive 70s feel to them. The sound combines strong electric guitar, Hammond B3 organ and piano lines, supported by drums, bass and violin to create a bracing musical experience.
The highly talented musicians who produced and recorded the album come from a variety of musical backgrounds including rock, punk, and classical. They include:
Christopher Pennington, lead guitarist, lead singer, and producer. Christopher was instrumental in molding the raw material of the songs to their present shape. He recorded his first album at Rockfield Studios (Wales) and toured the UK, supporting acts like Tears for Fears and Bob Geldof. He has also written and produced songs for TV shows such as The Young and the Restless, and Sons of Anarchy.
Nathalie Bonin on violin. Nathalie is very active on the local and international classical music scene. She has won numerous awards, including 1st Prize Darhius Milhaud Competition, 1st Prize Long Island University Summer Festival Concerto Competition, and winner of the Canadian Music Competition in Montreal. She was guest soloist with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. She has performed and recorded with Luciano Pavarotti, Garou, Salvatore Adamo, and Bran Van 3000.
Joel Campbell on keyboards. Joel has toured with the Eurythmics, Tina Turner and Janet Jackson in his varied and illustrious career. He has written and/or produced songs for renowned artists such as Carole King, Luther Vandross, and Slim Williams.
