MoMA PS1 Celebrates KRAFTWERK with DJ Harvey, Questlove et al., Sundays thru May 13

MoMA PS1 celebrates the influence of Kraftwerk with legedary DJ's in the performance dome every Sunday, now through May 13. Greg Wilson, DJ Harvey, Questlove, and DJ Afrika Bambaataa pay tribute to the German Electro-pioneers amidst the special installation Kraftwerk - Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 at the MoMA PS1, 22-25 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City. Kraftwerk - Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 is a special audio and visual installation in the MoMA PS1 Performance Dome that is organized in conjunction with The Museum of Modern Art's live performance retrospective of Kraftwerk, which ran April 10 through 17.

Last weekend, techno pioneers Juan Atkins and Francois K—joined by surprise guest Ralf Huetter—paid tribute to Kraftwerk's influence with unforgettable DJ sets amidst Kraftwerk - Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, Every Sunday for the remainder of the exhibition (through May 13), legendary DJ's Greg Wilson, DJ Harvey, Questlove, and DJ Afrika Bambaataa will explore different facets of Kraftwerk's pioneering sound, which influenced musical styles as diverse as Electro-Funk, Disco, New Wave, Techno, and Hip-Hop.

Sunday, April 22: GREG WILSON
4:00-7:00 p.m.

Greg Wilson is regarded as one of the most important figures on the UK dance scene where he was instrumental in introducing new electronic, post-disco records coming out of New York in the early 1980s. The sound, he dubbed 'Electro-Funk', was in return profoundly influenced by the German electro-pioneers Kraftwerk.

Sunday, April 29: DJ HARVEY
3:00-6:00 p.m.

DJ Harvey earned an international following for his idiosyncratic, ever-increasing, and extremely danceable sets. Mixing musical styles as eclectic as Disco, House, Funk and Soul, Harvey takes his listeners on a historical journey through Kraftwerk's manifold influences.

Sunday, May 6: QUESTLOVE
3:00-5:30 p.m.

Questlove—a drummer, DJ, and music producer—is best known as a member of the neo-soul Hip Hop band The Roots. During his DJ set, he will explore Kraftwerk's importance for early Electro-Funk and Hip Hop.

Sunday, May 13: AFRIKA BAMBAATAA
3:00-6:00 p.m.

In 1982 Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force sampled Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express and created with Planet Rock one of Hip Hop's first hymns. Like many Rap and Hip Hop musicians after him Bambaataa used Kraftwerk's melodies and sound inventions to electronically reinvent the rhythmic complexity of black dance music.

On occasion of Kraftwerk's critically-acclaimed retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the German Electro-Avant-gardists created an audio visual installation especially for the MoMA PS1 Performance Dome. Kraftwerk's eight iconic albums are represented through selected tracks which are accompanied by visuals illustrating Kraftwerk's continuing influence on sound and image culture.

Kraftwerk - Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 is on view in the MoMA PS1 Performance Dome from April 12-May 14, 2012 and is organized by Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator at Large, The Museum of Modern Art, and Director, MoMA PS1; with the assistance of Eliza Ryan, Curatorial Assistant, MoMA PS1 and Lizzie Gorfaine, Project Coordinator, MoMA PS1.

Note that while admission to MoMA PS1 is suggested donation, full admission ($10 adults, $5 students and seniors) is required to enter this special exhibition.
