The High Hat Club EP moves between jaunty, jazz-tinged rock and roll to swooning ballads, all anchored by Maimone's "keyboard in the style of Fats Waller and Jerry Lee Lewis combined, and vocals that recalls Tom Waits and Warren Zevon." - Windy City Times
Writing The High Hat Club EP was a deeply freeing experience; "finally singing openly about other men feels natural, and very liberating" says Maimone. "While I have written songs about coming out, and social issues surrounding it, this is the first time it has felt right to sing a relationship song with another "he" in it."
Maimone grew up in conservative rural Ohio, not coming out of the closet to his Catholic parents until age 30. Maimone explains, "Through my songwriting, I try to turn these disparate life experiences into music that relates to all different people, helping us discover commonality. There are a million he-she blues songs. I wanted to show that a man can sing the blues about how his man left him, too."
