After the initial viral growth of winning, both Trainor and Sheeran showed continued viral growth and maintained their number 1 viral ranking on iTunes. Trainor's viral growth increased 11.9 percent and Sheeran's viral growth increased 25 percent in the days following the Grammys. One of the biggest increases of viral growth on iTunes for Best Record nominees was D'Angelo's "Black Messiah", which grew 147 percent and hit the number 2 spot on the iTunes viral ranking.

EchoRank found that the top Grammy nominated artists and albums for viral growth in the 24-hours after from the following categories included:

  • Album of the Year category - Kendrick Lamar, "To Pimp a Butterfly"
  • Song of the Year category - Ed Sheeran, "Thinking Out Loud"
  • Record of the Year - Ed Sheeran, "X"
  • New Artist of the Year - Megan Trainor, "Title (Deluxe)"

"For the music industry, the ability to understand the virality of a musician's content can create a great value for a new record launch or sponsor partnership," says Roxanne Gibert, EchoRank's CEO. "There is an over reliance on engagement and vanity metrics to measure content performance, what it doesn't show is how content goes beyond likes, comments, and shares. By measuring the viral growth of organic social media campaigns and tracking attribution, EchoRank allows marketers to understand what is truly working for them and on which channels and social networks. This is why we found it powerful to track the virality of an album on iTunes".

Using a content first approach, EchoRank measures the growth of channels, such as iTunes, Spotify, and SoundCoud across both Twitter and Facebook. EchoRank provides attribution to each conversation's interaction point to measure ROI. EchoRank began tracking the viral growth of iTunes content on Twitter and Facebook last month, and is currently a certified data partner consuming their social data APIs.
