Massey Hall Presents iskw? At Mod Club Image

The multi-award winning artist iskw?, performed this past weekend at Roy Thomson Hall alongside City & Colour, Weaves, Bahamas, and Hayden as part of the 5th annual Dream Serenade. Blending soulful, breathlessly delivered lyrics coloured by the many shades of human nature, iskw?'s artistry knows no bounds. Taking its cue from the 1990s Bristol sound, iskw?'s music is a rallying cry that revels in her strength of self.

On February 23 iskw? will reveal a new and immersive experience for her live show at Toronto's The Mod Club. The audience can expect the same thought-provoking artistic statements along with new visual elements that strengthen the stories that she's collected over the past 13 months of touring the globe. The performance will also serve as a turning point in iskw?'s evolution as the artist transitions to Standard Roman Orthography (SRO) for the written version of her name.

"As I continue to learn more and more about my heritage and culture I am continually inspired by how profound the subtleties and their impacts are on how we as a society view our place in the world," says iskw?. "When it was shared with me that Cree academics typically use lower case and SRO to translate the language, I was moved by the sense of equality that it informs between names and titles and beings. Removing hierarchy in something as simple as a word but also in something so uniquely you, your identity, your own name, is humbling and yet intuitive. As an artist, I hope to share these learnings and use them as an example for others through my work. This name change in the written word I hope signals my commitment to learning and participating with my community and with my audience and honours the ongoing dialogue of who we are and where we come from."
