Mariee Sioux Announces New Album 'Grief In Exile' Image

Mariee Sioux has long been a fixture in the California folk scene, revered for her delicate fingerpicking and mystical songs that reflect her Native American heritage and her upbringing in the Sierra Nevadas, land that resides on occupied Nisenen territory in Northern California. Sioux is a musician's musician, having collaborated with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star and opened for such greats as Joanna Newsom and Buffy Sainte-Marie.

Today, she announces her third record Grief In Exile, due out June 7 on Night Bloom Records. Unlike some of Sioux's more stream-of-consciousness earlier work, this album comes from a more refined and deeply personal space. The songs show how indigenous remembrance, plant medicine, and ceremonial traditions played an important role in Sioux's recovery from alcoholism, depression, and intense heartbreaks.

Sioux premiered a video for the album's exquisite first single "Snow Knows White" via Brooklyn Vegan. The video was filmed in Bolinas, California, also where Sioux wrote the song following a difficult breakup. "I penned this song in a day as if it immediately had to be born to start the transformation process to move on and heal from a very entrenched love affair," says Sioux, "an experience that left me shaken and grasping to reclaim myself."

Grief In Exile is out June 7 on Night Bloom Records and is available for pre-order HERE.
