Mariah Carey is bringing her voice back to Sony and Epic Records.
Carey has been with Universal Music Group and DefJam Records in the past, but while with them, her most recent musical endeavours turned out to be flops, with June's "Me.I. Am Mariah" selling less than 250k. They did not come close to her DefJam hits "The Emancipation of Mimi" and "E=MC2."
However, her pals from DefJam seem to be gone, including L.A. Reid, the label's former chief, who also left DefJam for Epic Records. Reid now has Meghan Trainor, Sara Barielles, Fifth Harmony, and more under his wing at Epic with the expectation that he could relaunch Carey's career.
Sony's first move with Carey with the label may be to make a similar move to Barbra Streisand and produce a duets album featuring pop stars to boost her comeback album's popularity.
