With crossover success at home in South Africa, and the likes of Damon Albarn, Stormzy, Ghetts, DJ Target, Africa Express, and Diplo, championing his music internationally, MUZI has firmly established himself as one of the country's hottest artists. Released on his own imprintWE.THE.BUNDU via !K7 and Sony Music Africa, 'Afrovision' is his second album, and follows his debut, 'Boom Shaka', the 2016 release which saw him tipped by The Fader, Mixmag, Vice, Afropunk, Complex, The Independent, Rinse FM, Noisey, iD, UKF, Mass Appeal, and many more. New single, 'Nu Day' (ft. Okmalumkoolkat) is available from 28/3 while 'Afrovision' is due on 11/5, ahead of summer shows includingWomad.
'Afrovision' was written and recorded exclusively in South Africa, MUZI having returned there after time in Berlin and Europe. His music remains deeply inspired by his upbringing - a tale of striving through adversity in the semi-rural township of Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal, where he'd have to ride for miles to get internet access to send demos to record labels - but MUZI's return 'home' has had a profound effect on his music and songwriting, reflecting the optimism and energy of the burgeoning SA music scene(s).
This album sees MUZI continue to evolve as an artist, producer, and as a songwriter. 'Afrovision' comes at a time when his bold fusion of hip hop beats, afrobeat, pop, electronica, kwaito (South Africa's homegrown club sound), and traditional Zulu music, has earned him chart success ('Zenzile' and 'Desire' (feat. Yanga Madlala) reached Top 30, and No.17 respectively in 5FM's SA Top 30 Chart), alongside heavy MTV support; and shown international ears that there's more to South African electronic music than gqom. His hugely successful ad syncs for Apple's iWatch, Ralph Lauren, and Nandos, demonstrate how emerging artists like MUZI can bypass traditional routes to achieve global exposure.
'Afrovision' includes the recent single 'Chocolate Dreams' featuring SA vocalist Una Rams (recently signed by Black Coffee) and Nigerian singer Saint Seaba, this track has been heavily supported by BBC 1Xtra and DJ Target, and is available as an Instant Grat with the album.
Prior to 'Boom Shaka', MUZI's 'Fire FX EP' garnered the attention of major names and labels including Mad Decent, Foreign Beggars, OWSLA. The lead EP track, 'Fire (VIP)' was used on the soundtrack to 'Generation Revolution', the British documentary which explores contemporary Black and Asian activism. MUZI's connection to the UK was further strengthened when he travelled back to South Africa with Stormzy to shoot theVice/Noisey mini-documentary, 'Stormzy & MUZI: From South London to South Africa'.
As a DJ, MUZI's become a fixture at South Africa's most important clubs and festivals. He made his UK debut at Bestival, and made a significant impression on Berlin's club scene via sets at Ohm, Schwuz, Musik & Frieden, and Monarch (where he headlined a Vice party that saw 1000 people descend on the 250 capacity venue).
