Lora Faye's music elegantly expresses a deep and almost historical feeling of yearning, but its burnished glamour transcends specific genres. It's a transporting sensibility that thoroughly permeates her artistic conception. Onstage she achieves that rare feat of combining theatricality and authenticity, with a distinct aesthetic that incorporates the formidable and eclectic talents of her band.
"I see this as a project about the playfulness around the performance of love: gender presentation, sexuality, the language of longing and lust, the melodies of rejection and deep, dark secrets," she says. "A waltz is a push and pull dance between two people. So there is also a metaphor built in there of 'dancing around' a core issue."
Waltzes includes five tracks that touch on everything from dark and emotional 90's rock ballads, to straight-on American folk and crunched-out Rock n' Roll, to some compelling experiments in the rejection of traditional song form.
Faye was the grand prize winner of NPR's Mountain Stage NewSong Songwriting Contest, beating out 12 contestants, whittled down from 2,000 entries, in the prestigious competition.
